What is Gonorrhoea?
Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoea.
It is transmitted by oral, vaginal or anal sex. Gonorrhoea can infect the genitals, mouth and rectum.
According to the Ministry of Health, nearly a quarter of new reported gonorrhoea cases last year in Malaysia were among adolescents aged below 21 at 408 (22.4 per cent) of 1,819 total cases.
This number is expected to rise if preventive measures such as STD education is not put into place.
Going to a men’s health clinic in Malaysia to get tested for gonorrhoea or any other STD can be an embarrassing experience hence many people who may suspect they have an STI wait a certain period before going to the doctor to get tested.
If one is educated in the signs and symptoms of gonorrhoea, diagnosis and treatment will not be delayed. You can do a self-assessment of your symptoms to determine if you do have gonorrhoea. You may also use home testing kits as an alternative to diagnose this condition.
What are the common symptoms of Gonorrhoea?
Below are some of the symptoms to look out for. In men, common symptoms include:
- pain or burn when urinating
- a white, yellow or greenish discharge from the penis
- painful or swollen testes
Most women with gonorrhoea do not have symptoms or do not notice them. If they occur, they can include
- pain or burning when urinating
- vaginal discharge
- vaginal bleeding between periods or during sexual intercourse
How is Gonorrhoea spread and what can I do to prevent it?
Gonorrhoea is spread through sexual fluids including vaginal fluid and semen.
You can get gonorrhoea from vaginal intercourse, anal sex, oral sex and even sharing sex toys with an infected person.
To lower your risk of getting gonorrhoea:
- Use a condom if you have sex.
Not having sex and avoiding sexual activity is the surest way to prevent gonorrhoea. But if you choose to have sex, use a condom during any type of sexual contact, including anal sex, oral sex or vaginal sex.
- Limit your number of sex partners.
Being in a monogamous relationship in which neither partner has sex with anyone else can lower your risk.
- Be sure you and your partner are tested for sexually transmitted infections.
Before you have sex, get tested and share the results with each other.
- Don’t have sex with someone who appears to have a sexually transmitted infection.
If someone has symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection, such as burning during urination or a genital rash or sore, don’t have sex with that person.
- Consider regular gonorrhoea screening.
Annual screening is recommended for sexually active women younger than 25 and for older women at increased risk of infection. This includes women who have new sex partners, more than one sex partner, sex partners with other partners, or sex partners who have sexually transmitted infections.
Is Gonorrhoea a permanent STD?
Rest assured gonorrhoea is not a permanent STD. Treated with antibiotics, gonorrhoeal infections can be cured 95% to 99% of the time.
Gonorrhoea can cause various severe complications. For this reason, it is important to receive treatment for gonorrhoea symptoms in Malaysia as soon as possible.
For women, gonorrhoea can lead to:
- PID
- chronic pelvic pain
- infertility
- ectopic pregnancy
For men, gonorrhoea can lead to epididymitis, which can cause problems with fertility.
