PEP & PREP

PEP
If you think you may have been exposed to HIV through unprotected sex, condom breakage, injecting drug usage or needle-stick injury, taking HIV medication, or Anti Retroviral Therapy (ART) for 1 month can prevent long-term infection with HIV.

PEP needs to be started within 72 hours of exposure, before the virus can take hold in your system. Your doctor will decide if you are eligible or not, as some exposure may not be high enough risk to warrant potential side effects of PEP.

Come see us as soon as possible if you have been exposed.

PREP
There is now excellent evidence that if you are HIV negative, taking medication in advance (prophylactically) is highly effective in preventing you from acquiring HIV if you are at risk of being exposed. This is known as PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis).

If you are considering taking it. It involves an initial screen to make sure that you are HIV negative, as well as baseline STI and kidney tests. Once taking it, it generally involves a check with your Doctor every 3 months, depending on how you take it.

There are currently 3 different ways to take PrEP – daily, intermittent or periodic, and on-demand.

Come talk to us about which method is best for you.

HIV Counselling

Receiving a HIV positive result is not easy. Many go through something similar to the 4 stages of grief; denial, anger, depression and finally acceptance. Counselling can help you through this difficult time.

The aims of ongoing counselling are to:

  • Help you to manage the impact that HIV has on your own life, and the lives of the people around you.
  • Encourage you to take control of your health and take charge of your life.
  • Help you to accept your result and live positively with HIV/AIDS
  • Explore the advantages and disadvantages of telling other people about your status.
  • Assist you in tackling your problems
  • Provide emotional and psychological support
  • Help you to strengthen your support system
  • Help you to plan for the future
  • Explore issues around death and dying
  • Refer you to community resources

Our doctors at Universal Clinic have experience in HIV treatment regiments and will closely monitor your progress until undetectable levels are achieved.

HIV Treatment

  • The treatment for HIV is called antiretroviral therapy (ART). ART involves taking a combination of HIV medicines (called an HIV treatment regimen) every day.
  • ART is recommended for everyone who has HIV. People with HIV should start taking HIV medicines as soon as possible. ART cannot cure HIV, but HIV medicines help people with HIV live longer, healthier lives. ART also reduces the risk of HIV transmission.
  • A main goal of HIV treatment is to reduce a person’s viral load to an undetectable level. An undetectable viral load means that the level of HIV in the blood is too low to be detected by a viral load test. People with HIV who maintain an undetectable viral load have effectively no risk of transmitting HIV to their HIV-negative partners through sex.

Our doctors at Universal Clinic have experience in HIV treatment regiments and will closely monitor your progress until undetectable levels are achieved.
